Jung for Humans: The Translation Layer
The same system with the notation stripped away: four root principles, a false friends dictionary, the eight instruments, boundary traffic and the energy story. The human layer of jungscript.
The human layer of the Jung Compression Project (JCP): the same system as the formal spec, with the notation stripped away. The backbone lives in jungscript: Jung's Typology as a Closed System; the public ancestor is Deciphering Jung's Typology.
One symbol survives from the formal layer, because you need it to read Jung at all: a raised ᴶ after a word means Jung's meaning is not the everyday meaning. When you see feelingᴶ, drop what you think "feeling" means. That single habit removes most of the confusion in his work.
The four root principles
Everything in Jung's typology is four ideas, applied over and over.
- Everything comes in pairs. The psyche runs on tension between opposites the way a battery runs on two poles: conscious and unconscious, inward and outward, each mental instrument and its mirror twin. Remove one pole and nothing flows.
- Energy is conserved. Attention withdrawn from one pole does not vanish; it charges the opposite pole, out of sight. Lean hard enough on anything and something starts pushing back from the dark. Jung calls the pushback compensationᴶ (not payment: counterweight).
- Refinement is a dial. Every capacity ranges from primitive-and-fused to precise-and-steerable. Jung calls the dial differentiation. Strong emotion turns it down; development turns it up.
- You never touch the world directly. Between you and any thing stands your imageᴶ of it. Most of Jung's hard vocabulary is traffic control for those images.
The false friends dictionary
The words that make Jung feel impossible are ordinary words he quietly redefined. This table is the toll you pay once, instead of on every page.
| Term | What you'd think | What Jung means | Snapshot |
|---|---|---|---|
| attitudeᴶ | mood, opinion | the standing direction of your energy: inward or outward | an introvert reads the room from the inside out |
| libidoᴶ | sex drive | psychic energy in general, the currency of everything mental | interest, attention, drive: all one budget |
| willᴶ | willpower, wanting | the energy consciousness can spend on command | what you can actually steer today |
| feelingᴶ | emotion | calm, rational judgment of worth | the poker player quietly folding is using feelingᴶ |
| affectᴶ | influence (the verb) | emotion proper, with racing pulse and hot face | the poker player tilting is in affectᴶ |
| thinkingᴶ | any mental activity | judgment by concepts: true or false | naming, defining, deducing |
| sensationᴶ | a vague feel | plain sense perception of what is factually here | the coffee is lukewarm; the door is open |
| imageᴶ | a picture | the mind's native representation of anything | your "mother" is an imageᴶ, not the woman |
| ideaᴶ | any thought | the distilled meaning inside a deep, inherited image | "justice" pulled out of the scales |
| identityᴶ | who you are | a state where you and the thing are not yet two | toddler and mother; fan and club |
| complexᴶ | a hang-up | an autonomous charged cluster that can seize the controls | the family dinner argument that runs itself |
| empathyᴶ | kindness | a mechanism: taking the other in while remaining yourself | feeling your way into a client, ego intact |
| compensationᴶ | payment | the unconscious counterweight to your conscious lean | the strict rationalist's sentimental streak |
| rationalᴶ | sensible | based on judging (thinkingᴶ or feelingᴶ) | verdict-making of either kind |
| irrationalᴶ | crazy | prior to judgment: pure perceiving | seeing and sensing before any verdict |
Two words pass without a mark, which shows the mark means something: intuition (the everyday hunch is close enough: perception of what could be) and projection (pop psychology inherited roughly the right meaning).
The compass: eight instruments
Two questions locate anyone. How do you take the world in: by what is (sensationᴶ) or by what could be (intuition)? How do you decide: by concept (thinkingᴶ) or by worth (feelingᴶ)? Each of the four can point inward or outward. That yields eight instruments, each with its own standing question:
| Pointed inward | Pointed outward | |
|---|---|---|
| Thinkingᴶ (decide by concept) | Ti: what is true in my own logic? | Te: what works, in the outer system? |
| Feelingᴶ (decide by worth) | Fi: what feels right by my inner values? | Fe: what keeps the shared field in harmony? |
| Sensationᴶ (perceive what is) | Si: what impression does this leave in me? | Se: what concrete fact is here and now? |
| Intuition (perceive what could be) | Ni: what inner vision is forming? | Ne: what outer possibilities are opening? |
Three of the eight matter most in one person. Your lead is the most refined instrument, the one whose question you ask without noticing. A helper assists from the other row: if your lead perceives, your helper judges, and vice versa. And the lead's mirror twin (flip the column and the pole: the twin of Fi is Te) is your least refined instrument, living closest to the unconscious. It is the eruption channel: where you flood, fumble and surprise yourself.
One honest note against the MBTI habit: Jung fixed the helper's row (perceiver helps judge, judge helps perceiver) but never said which way it points. Watch actual behavior instead of deriving it from a four-letter code.
Boundary traffic
Principle 4 says a line runs between you and the world, and images cross it constantly. Jung named the traffic patterns; they sound exotic but you do all of them weekly:
| Pattern | Direction | What changes | Do you notice? | Everyday snapshot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| projection | out | how the other looks to you | no | denying your own aggression, you find everyone hostile |
| introjection | in | what you carry | partly | the critical parent's voice becomes your inner standard |
| empathyᴶ | in | what you carry, ego standing | yes | you feel your way into the client and stay yourself |
| identification | in | who you are | no | under a charismatic leader you speak in their voice |
| identityᴶ | no line yet | nothing: never two | no | the toddler's mood is the mother's mood |
| participation mystique | partial merge | the line itself, locally | no | the stadium roars: the striker's goal is your own act |
| assimilation | inward fit | the input bends to you | either | you restate a harsh remark in your own terms |
| dissimilation | outward fit | you bend to the input | either | your tone drifts toward the remark's style |
The formal layer shows these eight are literally one operation with four settings: direction, cargo, awareness, and what gets adjusted. Learn the four dials and the exotic vocabulary becomes rows in a table.
When the past grabs the wheel
The chain that explains most overreactions, in five steps:
- Trigger. Something out there matches old charged material: a tone, a phrase, a smell.
- Constellation. The matching cluster (a complexᴶ) switches on. It has its own charge and its own agenda.
- Tinted intake. New input is no longer perceived raw; it is apperceived: linked to whatever is lit up. After harsh feedback constellates shame, a neutral email reads as criticism.
- Fit. Either you bend the input to you (assimilation: "he probably meant it badly, like they always do") or you bend to it (dissimilation: your whole tone shifts to match the attack you imagined).
- Flooding. If the charge is high enough, affectᴶ takes over: pulse, heat, and a sharp drop in refinement. You are, briefly, more primitive than you are.
Nothing in the chain requires the current event to be important. That is the point: the size of the reaction measures the charge of the cluster, not the size of the trigger.
The energy story

a third way appears the flip into the opposite
(growth) (rebound)
The flip is recognizable everywhere once named: the rigid logician's sentimental flood, the harmony keeper's suddenly tactless verdicts, the routine keeper's reckless novelty binge, the possibility chaser's descent into detail tyranny. The synthesis is quieter and rarer: logic that learned consideration, values that learned effectiveness, tradition that adapts, vision that lands on concrete ground.
Jung's name for running this loop deliberately, for life, is individuation: differentiate your instruments, take the counterweight seriously, hold the tension instead of dropping it, and let the third thing appear. Becoming the specific whole you already potentially are.
Reading yourself
Five prompts that put the system to work:
- Which of the eight questions do you ask by default? That is your lead.
- Which do you ask last, or badly, or only under duress? That is the mirror twin: expect eruptions there, and treat them as information.
- Think of your last flood. Which flip pattern was it? What had you been over-leaning on in the weeks before?
- Catch one projection this week: a strong verdict about someone that, on inspection, fits you.
- Notice one boundary moment: did you translate the input into your own terms (assimilation), or did it quietly re-tune you (dissimilation)? Neither is wrong; being able to tell them apart is the skill.
Where the formal layer lives
Everything above is the rendered surface of a small formal system: six primitives, four axioms, sixty defined terms, every claim tagged as Jung's or ours. If you want the backbone, with operators, closure rules and the audit, it is here: jungscript: Jung's Typology as a Closed System. The plan is for this human layer to become a build target of that one: cards, graphs and flashcards generated from the same records, so the two layers can never drift apart.
